A superhero is a fictional character who is noted for feats of courage and nobility, who usually has a colorful name and costume and abilities beyond those of normal human beings. The DC Universe is the fictional shared setting where most of the comic stories published by DC Comics take place. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are well-known superheroes from this universe. The leading heroes of the DC Universe were originally (in the 1940s) known as the Justice Society of America and their exploits were published in All-Star Comics. The superhero genre has borrowed particularly frequently from the substance of ancient mythologies. Characters borrowed from mythology include, to mention a few: Amen-Hotep, Atlas, Thor, Zeus, Mercury, Osiris, Rhea, Odin, Cerebus, Ibis, Artemis, Hercules, Chronos, Lilith, Prometheus and Ares.
